The European Tour’s flagship event will feature its largest-ever purse when the tournament returns in May.
The tour announced Thursday that the BMW PGA Championship has increased its purse by €250,000, with the total prize money now at €5 million (or about $5.7 million).
Rory McIlroy is the defending champion of the event, scheduled for May 21-24 at Wentworth.
George O’Grady, the European Tour’s chief executive, hailed the move as “a sure sign of the tournament’s pre-eminence on the European Tour international schedule.”
For the sake of comparsion, the PGA Tour’s flagship event, The Players, features a $10 million purse, with $1.8 million going to the winner.
