ATLANTA – In what some see as a one-spot qualifier for next week’s Ryder Cup, Bubba Watson didn’t exactly give U.S. captain Davis Love III a reason to start etching his name into a locker at Hazeltine National with his play on Thursday at East Lake.
The southpaw hit just half his fairways on Day 1 at the Tour Championship on his way to a 2-over 72 that left him in the middle of the pack at the 30-man finale.
Watson, who was among three players to take a scouting trip to Hazeltine National this week, said he was trying to focus on this event, even though he admitted to making the Olympics and qualifying for the Ryder Cup were his two primary goals in 2016.
Watson even gave Love an alternative if he’s not a pick on Sunday night.
“I sent him a text that said, ‘Can I be an assistant captain if you don't pick me?’ So I put it out there,” Watson said. “I want to be a part of the team no matter what.”
