GLENEAGLES, Scotland – There is a school of thought this week that U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson made Webb Simpson one of his three captain’s picks at least partially based on his experience and relationship with Bubba Watson.
The complicated formula captains use for pairings often hinges on similarities of game, which would leave Bubba in a category by himself, and comfort level. Bubba, an enigma in both play and personality, likely presented Watson with a pairing challenge.
In Simpson, the captain had someone with a close relationship with Watson and a bit of history. The odd couple went 2-1-0 in 2012 at Medinah and 3-1-0 as a team at the 2011 Presidents Cup.
Simpson also has one of the more unique perspectives on the two-time Masters champion.
“I guess what I've learned around him is the more fun he has and the more joking he can do, the better off he is as a golfer and as a person,” Simpson said. “He could be a comedian if he wanted to be, or at times I think he's an introvert. So he's one of those guys that he's hard to figure out because you see a couple different sides to him.”
