Sam Johnston had an eventful opening round in the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada qualifying tournament. On the Nicklaus Course at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla., the amateur made a quintuple bogey-8 on the par-3 fifth hole and followed it with an albatross on the par-5 sixth.
Johnston began his first round on the 10th hole and was 1 under prior to reaching No. 5 (his 14th). He was then 4 over while playing No. 6. And back to 1 over at the seventh. He finished with an even-par 72 and shot 2-over 74 in the second round. He was tied for 23rd place through two rounds.
This is the first of four qualifying events for the 2016 season. The medalist is exempt for the season, Nos. 2-16 (no ties) are exempt through the first reshuffle, and Nos. 17-40 (plus ties) have conditional status.
