Cellphone video used to review Cook's double hit

Champions Tour officials used cellphone video from an event staffer Sunday to determine whether John Cook double-hit his shot on the 14th hole at the Regions Tradition.

With his ball buried deep under the lip of a bunker, Cook chopped out and his ball ricocheted backward. Cook did not think that he double-hit the ball, but a social media volunteer’s cellphone video showed otherwise.

Said Brian Claar, the Champions Tour’s vice president for competition, according to the AP: “Golf Channel didn’t have a great view of it but there was someone with the event who was shooting social media video of it that had a face-on angle, and it was clear that he double-hit it.”

Cook got slapped with a one-shot penalty on the hole, taking a double-bogey 6 and falling two shots off the lead. He added another bogey on 16 and finished in a tie for sixth, three shots behind Kenny Perry.

“That was bizarre,” Cook told reporters afterward. “I told Todd, my caddie, ‘You better move that bag because if this ball hits the lip it could go anywhere.’ And that’s what I thought it did. I didn’t hear anything. All I felt was my club hitting the lip of the bunker and then the sand catching the club.

“Evidently in all that, it hit my clubhead. I’m good with that. If it shows on TV, I can honestly say I didn’t feel anything but I don’t want to take something that wasn’t there.”
