Confident McIlroy's 2014 goal: Two majors

After a year that was more memorable for what happened off the course than on it – the equipment change, the bitter split with his management team, the engagement to his tennis-star girlfriend – Rory McIlroy is setting his 2014 goals, with one major ambition:

“I won a major in 2011 and 2012 but not in 2013,” he told the BBC recently, “so I’ll try to make up for that with two this year.”

Of course, it sounds like a more reasonable proposition after McIlroy ended last year with a victory in his penultimate start, chasing down Adam Scott on the final day to steal the Australian Open. In his last six worldwide starts, the world No. 6 has five finishes of 11th or better. His 2014 campaign gets underway Jan. 16-19 at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

“I didn’t have the greatest of seasons in 2013,” he said, according to the report, “but I feel like I’ll definitely make up for that in 2014.”
