Austin Connelly rallied from seven strokes down on Sunday to win the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest in Sea Island, Ga., and earn an invitation into this fall’s McGladrey Classic.
Connelly, who became the first player to finish runner-up (2014) and win the prestigious event, forced a playoff with Kyle Jones thanks to a tournament-record tying 68 on Sunday.
Both players traded pars on the first extra hole, and Connelly, who has committed to play golf at the University of Arkansas, rolled in a 15 footer for birdie at the second playoff hole for the victory.
Jones struggled to a closing 75 while Florida State junior Hank Lebioda finished one shot out of the playoff after a double bogey on his last hole.
Connelly became the first player to earn an exemption into the McGladrey Classic via his Jones Cup victory.
