Could Woods, Super Bowl cause a WMPO sell out?

Not long after Tiger Woods broke the news that he’d be opening up his 2015 campaign with a return to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a pertinent question was asked in regard to capacity at the TPC Scottsdale course.

Can tickets for this tournament ever be sold out?

“I guess we probably could, but we’ve obviously never been there,” Rob Myers, media relations director for the event, said Friday. “We’ve always advertised that we’ve never sold out, but when you have 200,000-plus, there could be a point where it’s a safety concern.”

For golf’s most well-attended tournament, that could become a possibility with Woods returning for the first time since 2001. Last year saw a single-week attendance record of 563,008 spectators, including nearly 190,000 on Saturday, the tournament’s busiest day.

Ticket sales were already expected to reach or even surpass last year’s total with the Super Bowl also being contested in the city during the same weekend, but Woods’ inclusion should ensure that a new record is set.

“It all depends on the weather, too,” Myers added. “If the weather is good, people are going to come.”

Those people aren’t just spectators. The tournament was already expecting increased media this year, but that number should increase, as well.

Myers said the tournament typically issues 500-550 media credentials for tournament week, but that number could balloon to more than 700 this year. There are also plans to build an auxiliary media center to host the influx of credential-holders for the event.
