The USGA announced Thursday that Fred Couples has withdrawn from next week's U.S. Senior Open, citing a back injury.
Couples has finished inside the top 15 in each of his three appearances in the event, including a runner-up showing in his debut in 2010. This season, the 54-year-old has five top-five finishes in six starts on the Champions Tour, including a win at the Toshiba Classic in March, and tied for 20th at the Masters. He last teed it up at the Regions Tradition in May, where he was disqualified after failing to show for his final-round tee time.
Couples will be replaced in the field by John Harris, the first alternate from the sectional qualifier in Byron, Minn.
Two other notable withdrawals were announced Thursday as Craig Stadler and Graham Marsh also pulled out of the field. Stadler, who has three top-10 finishes in nine U.S. Senior Open starts, cited a back injury and will be replaced by David Ishii. Marsh, who won the U.S. Senior Open in 1997, listed an undisclosed injury and will be replaced by Bruce Vaughan.
The U.S. Senior Open will be played July 10-13 at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla.
