AUGUSTA, Ga. – When Fred Couples made birdie on the first two holes Sunday at the Masters before the final two groups had teed off, the 54-year-old was within two shots of leaders Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson.
There was a buzz in the air at the time, the patrons hoping there was just a little more magic for Couples one more time around Augusta National.
Couples made several key putts on the front nine to stay in contention, but he came unraveled late with two double bogeys in a five-hole stretch. Couples shot 71-71-73-75 to tie for 20th place.
Couples was one of six players in his 50s to make the cut this week, a Masters record by two. The only reason he could think of as to why so many 50-somethings played well this week was, “because we play here so many times.”
