Days after close call, Watney opens with 66

LOS ANGELES – Following his runner-up finish at Pebble Beach on Sunday, Nick Watney said, "Hopefully next week I can get back in the hunt and maybe do one better."

So far, so good through one round at the Northern Trust Open.

Watney posted a 5-under 66 to move atop a crowded leaderboard at Riviera on the heels of his close call just days ago.

“I was disappointed for maybe 12 hours, but I think overall, it was almost all positive from last week,” he said. “ So you know, kind of just go over it, see what I could have done better there, especially on Sunday and then on to the next.”

He opened his round by making eagle on the short par-5 first hole, later adding three consecutive birdies to make the turn in 30 before playing the back nine in even-par.

“It's easy to kind of go out there on Thursday and just think good things are going to happen just because you played well the week before. But you have to reset and get back to when you were doing and hopefully you can have a chance again in the new week.”
