De Jonge continues strong play with 3-under 69

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Since shooting an opening-round 80 last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, Brendon de Jonge has played his last four rounds in 20 under par.

The back end of that eclectic run was Thursday’s 69 at TPC Sawgrass to move into the top 15 at The Players. The comparisons to last week’s opening effort prompted a smile from de Jonge.

“It's golf, these things are going to happen,” he said.

That Thursday 80 at Quail Hollow was just another difficult chapter for de Jonge this season. He injured a muscle on the right side of his ribs at the Honda Classic and the lingering impacts of that ailment remain.

“I hit some shots that caught me off guard,” he said. “I think I made a few adjustment (to his swing).”

De Jonge, who said his opening 80 at Quail Hollow was not injury related, saw a doctor the week of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and was advised to take that week off.

Although his ballstriking has been off lately, he said the injury has fully healed, and – as his results suggest – he is back at full health.
