DJ misses cut in first start since 'leave of absence'

SAN DIEGO – After six months away, Dustin Johnson’s return to competition lasted only two days.

Making his first start since late July because of “personal challenges,” Johnson missed the cut after rounds of 74-70 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

“It’s really close to being good,” said Johnson, who is making the first of five consecutive starts. “I think that the last few days I probably would be at least 5 or 6 under right now instead of even par, but I’m happy with where it’s at. Just a little rusty, that’s all.”

Johnson was far from the only big name who won’t be around for the weekend at Torrey Pines.

Headliners Tiger Woods (withdrawal) and Phil Mickelson (missed cut) are gone, and so are Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel.
