SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – Two guys who entered the PGA Championship as the favorites in many people’s minds are headed home with 36 holes remaining.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, who was riding a streak of 25 straight cuts (the longest on the PGA Tour) imploded in the first round with a 5-over 77 and never gave himself a chance on Friday to stick around, shooting 72, finishing nine strokes over the 2-over cut line. Some weeks you just don't have it.

Rory McIlroy at least broke par on Friday, but his problem was more evident. The four-time major champ missed eight putts inside 10 feet this week and was 1-for-12 on putts between 10-20 feet this week at Baltusrol, carding rounds of 74-69.

"I've hit the ball really well this week and I'm walking away not playing the weekend. It's really disheartening," said McIlroy. "As I said, I need to go back to the drawing board and see where we go from here."

Others out after two rounds:

Luke Donald (3 over), Sergio Garcia (5 over), Shane Lowry (5 over), Matt Kuchar (6 over) Tony Finau (7 over) and Graeme McDowell (9 over).
