The 21st-ranked player in the world went 0-3 in pool play last week at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play and decided late Friday, according to the Florida Times-Union, to withdraw from the PGA Tour's marquee event, just as he did last year.
The 25-year-old Frenchman arrived in the American golf consciousness last year with his run to the Match Play final and his subsequent play for Team Europe in the Ryder Cup.
He will be replaced in the field by 21-year-old PGA Tour rookie Justin Thomas, who appears excited for first his crack at The Players, if not his first at Sawgrass:
