English (T-2) trying to get off Masters bubble

ORLANDO, Fla. – The math, as of late Friday, was trending in Harris English’s favor.

For the 25-year-old, his second-round 66 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was good enough to move him into a share of second place, three strokes behind front-runner Morgan Hoffmann. The numbers that aren’t as clear loom on Sunday.

At 52nd in the World Golf Ranking, English needs a solid finish this week to crack the top 50 and earn his second start at the Masters. The cutoff for that deadline will come after next week’s Valero Texas Open.

If English were to finish inside the top 5 this week at Bay Hill (a win would automatically qualify him) he would move safely inside the top 50 in the ranking, likely around 46th. If he inches just inside the top 50 is where things get complicated.

“If I’m [ranked] 48th or 49th, it’s tough,” English said when asked if he would play next week if he found himself on the proverbial Masters bubble. “I’ve never been in this position before.”

English is currently committed to the field for next week in San Antonio, although he can withdraw at any time. Whether he plays the event remains to be seen.
