Ernst getting no respect as defending Wells champ

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Making a name for yourself on the PGA Tour isn’t easy.

Just ask Derek Ernst.

Ernst arrived for the Wells Fargo Championship a year ago as the fourth alternate into the field. He was ranked 1,207th in the world.

Ernst won here a year ago, beating David Lynn in a playoff. Back as the defending champion this week, Ernst says people aren’t quite remembering him right.

“Everyone calls me David Ernst, even all the people here,” Ernst said. “It seems like I've had it five times this week, `Hey, David Ernst, great job’ . . . `No, David was the guy I played in the playoffs last year, I'm Derek!’”
