The European Tour bowed to player criticism and announced Monday that it has made two changes to its end-of-season Final Series.
Members will no longer be required to participate in two of the first three events to be eligible for the season-ending DP World Tour Championship. Also, the bonus pool, which increased from $3.75 million to $5 million, will now be shared by the top 15 players, not 10.
With the changes, there is an incentive for players to tee it up in as many Final Series events as possible because it gives them a more realistic chance to win the top prize, which was claimed last year by Henrik Stenson.
Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel were among the players who said last fall that the requirements of the FedEx Cup-style series were unfair.
Said Garcia, “I’m very happy to see we have reached a middle ground which should help make us all happy.”
