ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Darren Clarke completed his practice round early Tuesday at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, but it wasn’t the European Ryder Cup captain’s game that drew attention as much as it was his wardrobe.
Clarke was sporting a pair of shorts during his practice round at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, a scene that might become familiar on the European circuit.
According to various sources, the European Tour is poised to pass a new regulation that will allow players to wear shorts during practice rounds.
A player meeting was scheduled for Tuesday night in Abu Dhabi where the European Tour’s chief executive officer, Keith Pelley, will unveil the new regulation.
“Isn’t this great,” smiled Ernie Els, who showed up for a practice round on Tuesday wearing blue shorts.
Lee Westwood also practiced on Tuesday in shorts and a few players at last week’s EurAsia Cup prepared for the team event wearing shorts.
