Depending on what happens Sunday, he will either be one of the most unlikely winners of the year or just another innocent bystander.
Trouble is, he is still seven shots behind Day heading into the final round.
“You kind of have to look at Jason as he’s an outlier, don’t have to worry about him, there's another tournament going on,” Fowler said. “If he happens to come back, then we may have a chance, but other than that, we’ll see if we can take care of the rest of the group of guys.”
Taking the long view, Fowler, who won the Deutsche Bank Championship, is projected to remain at No. 3 heading into the Tour Championship, where the points are then reset. If any of the top five players in the standings win at East Lake, they win the FedEx Cup.
“I still want to finish as high as possible and make sure the game is right where we want it to be to go win next week,” he said.
