Friendly rivalry budding between Lewis, Wie

RSS

Nobody should be surprised if this week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open picks up where the U.S. Women’s Open left off with Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie battling at the finish.

They’ve won the last two LPGA events staged, with Lewis winning the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship a week after Wie held off her charge to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

Their names have hit LPGA leaderboards more consistently than any other players this season.

Lewis has won three times this year, Wie twice.

Lewis and Wie rank first and second, respectively, in top-10 finishes in LPGA events this year with Lewis racking up 13 of them and Wie 10. They're also 1-2 on the money list and in scoring average.

Notably, Lewis and Wie have also become friends, getting to know each other better as Solheim Cup teammates and then as fellow South Floridians after moving there. They practice and play matches together with Lewis playing out of the Medalist Club in Hobe Sound and Wie out of The Bear’s Club in nearby Jupiter.

Lewis was asked at the Ricoh Women’s British Open Tuesday if they’re primed to become rivals.

“I think rivals are great for any sport, and I don't think you have to hate each other, because we are never going to hate each other,” Lewis said. “But I can tell you, we both want to beat each other once we get on the golf course, and that's all you need for a rivalry to work.  I think it would be a great thing.”

So does Wie.

“I feel very honored that people are putting me up against Stacy, No. 1 rank in the world,” Wie said. “Obviously, she's a really good player. I don't think you'll find a rivalry where we hate each other or anything. But I want her to do well. I think she wants me to do well. But I think it's fun because we definitely want to beat each other. I definitely don't want to lose to her, but at the same time, I was really happy that she won in Arkansas, and I think she was really happy I won at the U.S. Open. So, I think it's very cool.”
