PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – One year after turning a title contention into a comedy of errors with three shots into the water on TPC Sawgrass’ final two holes, Sergio Garcia finds himself back in the mix through one round of The Players Championship.
Garcia posted a 5-under 67 in the opening frame, leaving him two strokes behind Russell Henley.
“It was a nice day, no doubt,” he said. “Started very well, obviously got to 6 under after 13, and just a shame I hit a good putt on 5 for par, and it was playing tough. Unfortunately it lipped out and then had a couple chances that I didn't convert. You know, I can't be disappointed with 5 under.”
As for last year, when Garcia also made headlines for controversial comments about eventual champion Tiger Woods, he feels like that’s behind him.
“I think it's over. I think it's past. I didn't think I was a villain, but I think that we've all moved ahead of that. I certainly have. I'm just looking forward to now and hopefully what's coming soon.”
