Garcia made only one birdie during a 1-over 73 at Wentworth, then withdrew from the event citing a knee injury. He took to Twitter to explain the injury and prognosis:
Have an edema on the top of my kneecap & some cartilage on the left side of it that gives me pain.Treatment for 2 weeks to be ok for US Open— Sergio Garcia (@TheSergioGarcia) May 23, 2014
Garcia's early exit in England was a surprise, considering the fact that the Spaniard has played some good golf this season. Garcia has five top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in addition to his win in Qatar in January, and he finished third at The Players Championship in his most recent start.
The U.S. Open is slated for June 12-15 at Pinehurst (NC) No. 2. Garcia has four career top-10 finishes in the season's second major, including a tie for third the last time the tournament was held at Pinehurst back in 2005.
