Garcia answered the question pleasantly each time the subject was brought up but on Saturday he made sure to let everyone know that he received a nice note Wednesday night from Jose Maria Olazabal, another of Garcia’s idols while growing up in Spain.
Late Sunday, sitting in front of media while wearing the green jacket, Garcia shared the contents of that Olazabal note.
“Obviously he did mention a couple of things that did kind of touch my heart a little bit,” Garcia said. “He said, ‘I’m not sharing my locker at the moment, and I hope that I get to do it with you.’”
That would be the locker in the Champions Locker Room at Augusta National, where champions usually share with other champions because of limited space.
Garcia looked to Craig Heatley, the Augusta National member who was conducting the interview, and politely asked him if he could find a way for Olazabal and Garcia to become locker mates.
“He’s a great man and we’ve had a great relationship for many, many years,” Garcia said of Olazabal. “To be able to join him and Seve as Masters champions from Spain, it’s unbelievable.”
