Golf being contested in Summer Youth Olympics

The Summer Youth Olympic Games begin this week in Nanjing, China, with the Opening Ceremony on Aug. 16. The Games run through Aug. 28 and feature more than 3,600 athletes competing from over 200 countries.

Golf is one of 28 sports contested over the fortnight. The boys’ and girls’ individual competitions will take place Aug. 19-21 at the Nanjing Zhongshan International Golf Club, in a 54-hole, stroke-play format.

A mixed-team competition will be contested Aug. 24-26 at the same site. Teams consist of one male and one female member from each competing country. They will play foursomes (alternate shot) in Round 1, fourballs (better ball) in Round 2, and will combine individual scores in the third round. The gross scores for all three rounds will count.

This is the second edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games; the first being held in Singapore in 2010. Golf was not part of the annual SYOG.
