Golf's influential groups: 'Checked egos at the door'

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Leaders from golf’s five most influential groups in the United States gathered on Wednesday at TPC Sawgrass to announce a collaborative approach to growing, and sustaining, the game.

The PGA Tour, LPGA, PGA of America, U.S. Golf Association and Masters will team to focus on four areas of developing the game, including brining golf to young people, improving player development on an adult level, accessibility to the game and sustainability.

“The golf organizations have identified five key projects that have begun that we believe can be scaled and then with our joint resources can really have an impact on the game,” Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.

The five already existing initiatives include Drive, Chip and Putt, Get Golf Ready, the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, PGA Junior League Golf and The First Tee.

“We have checked our egos at the door and said, ‘OK, let’s narrow it down to some grow-the-game initiatives that we know will work and that we can rally around,” said Pete Bevacqua, the PGA CEO.

The group also plans to focus on sustainability and barriers to participation, including costs, time and resource management.

“One of the things we need to start getting across is the notion that hard golf is good golf. That’s just not right,” said USGA executive director Mike Davis. “Good golf is fun golf.”
