LOS ANGELES – From Phil Mickelson at the 1999 U.S. Open to Hunter Mahan at the Canadian Open two years ago and plenty of other instances in between, golfers competing with a baby on the way is nothing new.

Add Bill Haas’ name to that list.

Haas’ wife, Julie, is due with the couple’s second child next Friday, but he’ll be keeping close tabs on the home front while competing in the Northern Trust Open this week.

“I'll have my phone and probably be checking it every couple of holes,” he said Tuesday. “I assume somebody would contact the tournament or the Tour and a rules official would probably find me before I even check my phone to know if anything was going on.

“Pretty much when I tee it up on Thursday, I'll be focused on the task at hand. Obviously if something happens at home we'll make the decision then, but until then I'll be focused on trying to play. I think that's what my wife would want, too. She wouldn't want me out here not at 100 percent, I guess.”

As for advice from his wife, he knows enough to heed it.

“She said, ‘Don't unpack your suitcase. Just keep it packed up ready to go just in case.’ Yeah, I'll certainly make the family decision if I have to.”

Haas said he plans to skip both the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational after the birth of his daughter next month.
