He entered this week with a back injury, for which he was receiving treatment ever since his last start.
He felt so fragile on Wednesday that he prepped for the opening round by just walking the course.
And so consider it against all odds that he posted a 5-under 65 to grab the early lead.
“I still have quite a bit of pain, but I really wanted to play this week,” he said. “This is a bit of a test. The pain level is probably from 7 at Quail to 3 now, so I need to go back to the room and do rehab exercises and be ready for an early round tomorrow.”
Hanson posted six birdies – including five in a front-nine 30 -- against just a single bogey on the day.
“It was, of course, a great start, 5 under for the front nine. Always nice to get off to a fast start.”
