Harman wins Deere for first PGA Tour title

RSS

Brian Harman made the John Deere Classic his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday, shooting a 5-under 66 to defeat Zach Johnson by one shot at TPC Deere Run.

Leaderboard: Harman (-22), Johnson (-21), Jhonattan Vegas (-19), Jerry Kelly (-19), Scott Brown (-18), Tim Clark (-18)

What it means: In addition to collecting the usual perks for winning a PGA Tour event (two-year exemption, Masters invitation), Harman, a 27-year-old left-hander out of the University of Georgia (he's the sixth former Bulldog to win on Tour this year), qualified for the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

Round of the day: Johnson and Kevin Kisner tied for the day's best round, a 7-under 64. Johnson, who battled Harman down the stretch, barely missed a 10-foot birdie putt for 63 at the last. Kisner, yet another University of Georgia product, had six birdies, an eagle and a bogey.

Biggest disappointment: Three-time John Deere champion Steve Stricker went into the final round just one stroke behind Harman, but could manage only a 1-over 72. He finished tied for 11th.

Quote of the day: "I brought my passport and a couple of jackets. Man, I can't wait to get on that plane." - Harman on winning a berth in the British Open
