Beau Hossler, who briefly led the 2012 U.S. Open as a 17-year-old amateur, tied for the midway lead on Thursday at the Southern Amateur.

Hossler, a Southern California native who will be a sophomore at the University of Texas this fall, made eight birdies in shooting a 4-under 68 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

The round left him at 6-under 138, tied with first-round leader Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., who shot a 72.

The leaders have a one-shot lead on Will Starke of Chapin, S.C.
