GAINESVILLE, Va. – For 15 holes, Ryo Ishikawa’s round was far from perfect.
He played a wild opening nine in even par that included just three pars and arrived at the 16th tee exactly where he had started the day after four bogeys and four birdies.
But that’s when things turned around when his 9-iron tee shot at the par-3 16th hole rolled to tap in range and he converted his birdie attempt from about 10 feet at No. 17.
He completed his round with a lengthy birdie putt at the last for a second-round 68 that propelled him into the lead at the Quicken Loans National.
“My goal this week is 15, 16 under,” he said. “I’m not sure what the victory number will be but I just get focused on my number and it’s 15 under. I’m just here focused on that number.”
