It's been a year since McIlroy's last U.S. win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – At this point last year, Rory McIlroy was still king of the golf world.

He was first in the Official World Golf Ranking, by a long shot, had just won the WGC-Match Play and was four days away from claiming his second Wells Fargo Championship title.

Twelve months later, the Northern Irishman is now third in the world and a year removed from his last victory on the PGA Tour.

It would be unfair, and incorrect, to consider McIlroy’s current run a slump. He won the season-ending DP World Tour Championship on the European Tour after struggling with injury in 2015, and he has just two finishes outside the top 20 in seven global starts this year.

Still, Quail Hollow Club will be a good indication of where his game is considering his record in Charlotte.

“I do feel as if this is my best chance to get that first win [of 2016],” said McIlroy, who has just one finish outside the top 10 in six starts at the Wells Fargo Championship. “The positive vibes and the memories that I’ve had here, that really helped remembering the great shots that I’ve hit on some holes, the great putts that I’ve holed when I’ve needed to.”
