Dong-Kyu Jang, Juvic Pagunsan, Hyung-Tae Kim and Tomohiro Kondo earned each a spot in next month’s Open Championship by virtue of their finish Sunday in the Japan Tour’s Mizuno Open.
Four berths were available for the July 17-20 Open for the top four finishers not otherwise eligible.
Jang shot a final-round 69 to finish at 15-under 273 and record his first victory on the circuit. That total was three shots better than Pagunsan, while Kondo and Kim were another shot behind.
Kim and Jang have never played in the year's third major, while Kondo missed the cut in two appearances (2007, 2009) and Pagunsan tied for 72nd in the 2012 edition.
“I have never played a course like Royal Liverpool, but even if I play bad I’m playing in the Open Championship, which is a dream come true,” Jang told reporters afterward.
In addition, Yusaku Miyazato and Hyung-Sung Kim also earned spots in the Open after finishing 1-2 on the Japan Tour’s Order of Merit at the conclusion of the Mizuno Open.
That tournament represents the fourth stage in the 14-event Open Qualifying Series. The next tournament that will award British Open berths is the June 19-22 Irish Open.
