Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest drives on the PGA Tour. Here are the five most important distance-related stats from the Farmers Insurance Open, won by Jason Day.
Longest drive: Angel Cabrera, 364 yards
Cabrera, who's average of 294.2 yards ranks 62 on the PGA Tour, unleashed one 70 yards farther at Torrey Pines. After making the cut with rounds of 71-70, Cabrera, like much of the field, struggled over the weekend, posting back-to-back 75s to tie for 53rd.
Driving Distance: Jason Day, 308.9 yards
Day, the champion, led in distance, but left much to be desired when it came to accuracy off the tee. The Aussie hit just 26 of 56 fairways this week and somehow won the event playing from Torrey Pines' U.S. Open-like rough. if you're not going to find the short grass, it helps to bomb it out there.
Recent leaders: Tony Finau, 312.6 yards (Waste Management Phoenix Open); Tony Finau, 319.9 (Humana Challenge)
Carry distance: Jason Day, 312.9 yards
No surprise he's hitting it so far when he's swinging the club this hard. Day - who isn't one to get cheated, especially with a driver in his hands - took a mighty enough lash at the ball to end Tony Finau's two-week reign as the leader in this category. Finau still leads for the year at 307.2 yards.
Recent leaders: Tony Finau, 314.2 yards (Waste Management Phoenix Open); Tony Finau, 307.0 (Humana Challenge)
Clubhead speed: Tony Finau, 122.63 mph
And here's where Finau reasserts his dominance in all things power. He leads this category for the fourth time season, two more than Charlie Beljan, who leads on average at 124.51 mph.
Recent leaders: Charlie Beljan, 124.10 mph (Waste Management Phoenix Open); Tony Finau, 125.88 mph (Humana Challenge)
