Kings of Distance: Waste Management Phoenix Open

RSS

Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest drives on the PGA Tour. Here are the five most important distance-related stats from the Waste Management Phoenix Open, won by Brooks Koepka:

Longest drive: Harris English, 396 yards

English, who has won an event in each of the last two seasons, finished T-3 at the Sony two weeks ago but just T-40 in Scottsdale. Remarkably, 21 other players on Tour this season have hit a drive longer than 396. Jason Day and Geoff Ogilvy remain tied for the lead with blasts of 409 yards at Kapalua.

Recent leaders: Tony Finau 366, (Humana Challenge); Jason Day, 365 yards (Sony Open)

Driving distance: Tony Finau, 312.6 yards

Finau led this category for the second straight week and the third time this season but he once again had trouble finding the short grass. Finau finished T-22 at the Phoenix Open but just T-61 in driving accuracy at 55.3 percent.

Recent leaders: Tony Finau, 319.9 (Humana Challenge); Steven Bowditch, 318.4 (Sony Open)

Carry distance: Tony Finau, 314.2 yards

Go figure, Finau also led this category for the second straight week and the third time this season. You'll notice that while his average distance dropped from one week to the other, his carry distance actually increased. Blame it on the rain? Finau, for what it's worth, led every one of these categories last week.

Recent leaders: Tony Finau, (Humana Challenge); Daniel Berger, 299.1 yards (Sony Open)

Clubhead speed: Charlie Beljan, 124.10 mph

Beljan is both your leader this week and your leader this year on Tour, coming in at 124.76. Beljan finished T-66 at Scottsdale. Despite leading the Tour on average, this is the first week he's led the clubhead speed category since the season-opening Frys.com.

Recent leaders: Tony Finau, 125.88 mph (Humana Challenge); Charles Howell III, 121.14 (Sony Open)

Ball speed: Charlie Beljan, 183.73 mph

Beljan also leads here for the first time since the Frys. Bubba Watson remains the Tour leader at 183.90 mph.

Recent leaders: Tony Finau, 184.04 (Humana Challenge);Charles Howell III, 179.90 (Sony Open)
