Lewis, Ko, Park superstitious about CME prize

NAPLES, Fla. – Stacy Lewis, Inbee Park and Lydia Ko are unabashedly superstitious.

Well, they are when it comes to touching a trophy or prize before they’ve actually won it.

Lewis, Park and Ko are 1-2-3 in the Race to the CME Globe points standings for the $1 million season-long jackpot. They were asked to pose together holding a super-strength plexiglass cube reportedly filled with the winnings in $100 bills Wednesday at the CME Group Tour Championship. They all refused to touch it, however. LPGA staff scrambled for a table to lay the cube upon with the players agreeing to hold their hands over the box full of "Benjamins" for the photo.

Lewis was asked why the players wouldn’t touch it.

“Ask Yani,” Lewis said.

Yani Tseng famously walked to the Kraft Nabisco trophy on display at the first tee before the start of the final round in 2011, picked it up off its stand and hoisted it over her head for all there to see. She led going into that round but watched Lewis come from behind in their pairing together to win the trophy.

Lewis said she never thought superstitiously about trophies until that happened to Tseng.

“After that Kraft Nabisco, I don’t think anyone on tour will touch a trophy before they win it,” Lewis said.
