Love joins Couples as U.S. Presidents Cup assistants

DORAL, Fla. – Both Presidents Cup captains opted for continuity on Wednesday when the duo announced the assistant captains for this year’s matches.

U.S. captain Jay Haas named Davis Love III his second assistant; he had already tabbed Fred Couples to join him later this year in South Korea. Nick Price went with Tony Johnstone and Mark McNulty, who were his assistants in 2013 at Muirfield Village.

The U.S. team has won the last five matches, and eight of the 10 Presidents Cups that have been played, and Price hopes the formula he created for 2013 with Johnstone and McNulty will be refined enough to end that streak.

“They were such great support two years ago,” Price said. “Their insight was incredible.”

Haas, who served as an assistant captain for Couples, also went with a familiar lineup with the addition of Love, who was named the 2016 Ryder Cup captain last week.

“There’s a lot on his plate,” Haas said. “We just heard that he’s been elected to be on the policy board for the PGA Tour for the next three years. He’s a busy man, but he loves the team concept. I did ask him and he said, ‘I’m going to South Korea one way or the other.’”

This year’s matches will be played Oct. 8-11 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea.
