LPGA stars gather for Pressel charity event

The 2015 LPGA season doesn’t begin for another three weeks, but some of the top women in the game gathered in Boca Raton, Fla., Monday to play for a cause at the eighth annual Morgan & Friends Fight Cancer event at St. Andrews Country Club.

Morgan Pressel’s tournament is devoted to raising money to fight breast cancer. With Annika Sorenstam, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson, Brittany Lincicome, Jessica Korda and Gerina Piller scheduled to play, the Morgan Pressel Foundation will be looking to top the $4 million mark in total money raised since Pressel created the event in 2008. The event raised $600,000 a year ago.

Pressel’s event honors the memory of her mother, Kathy Krickstein Pressel, who died of breast cancer in 2003, when Morgan was 15.

“My mother was 44,” Pressel said in an interview Monday on Morning Drive. “That’s incredibly young. We are here so no other young girl has to lose her mother to breast cancer.”

Pressel’s work has funded creation of the Morgan Pressel Center for Cancer Genetics at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. It also funds the Kathy Krickstein Pressel MammoVan, which makes state-of-the-art digital mammography mobile, taking the technology into communities for residents of Palm Beach County. Morgan’s younger sister, Madison, a Symetra Tour player, is also involved in the effort and played Monday.
