McIlroy fondly remembers 2012 Honda Classic win

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Rory McIlroy ranks his Honda Classic victory in 2012 as one of the most memorable moments in his career.

With his victory that year, McIlroy rose to world No. 1, holding off a bold Sunday charge from Tiger Woods to win.

“Getting to No. 1 for the first time here, I’ll certainly remember,” McIlroy said.

Woods started that Sunday nine shots back but closed with a 62 to put pressure on McIlroy, who beat Woods and Tom Gillis by two shots.

“It was probably one of my better Sunday performances,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy tees it up this week looking to try to get back to No. 1 again. He’s No. 3 behind Jordan Spieth and Jason Day, neither of whom is in the field this week.

“I want to get there as soon as I can, and I feel like the next few weeks, there are opportunities to gain a lot of good world ranking points,” McIlroy said. “Winning tournaments and playing well takes care of all that stuff.”
