McIlroy officially commits to Honda Classic

Rory McIlroy committed to the Honda Classic Thursday, making official what was already expected to be the Ulsterman's 2015 PGA Tour debut.

The event takes place Feb. 26-March 1 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where McIlroy has played every year since 2009. His time at PGA National has been eventful each of the last three years: McIlroy won the tournament in 2012 to move to No. 1 in the world; he abruptly withdrew mid-round in 2013 citing a toothache; and he forfeited a late lead in 2014 before losing in a playoff to Russell Henley.

McIlroy is in the field this week at the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and is also committed to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in two weeks. His stated schedule will also include the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral the week following the Honda, while his final start before the Masters remains up in the air. McIlroy has typically played the week prior to the season's first major, which this year would be the Shell Houston Open, but earlier this week said he was considering making his first appearance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March.

"It's one I've never played and one I feel I should play for a lot of different reasons," McIlroy said. "So yeah, it's a strong possibility, definitely."
