Merritt nearly aces par 4

CROMWELL, Conn. – There’s been only one hole-in-one on a par 4 in recorded PGA Tour history, but Troy Merritt nearly added to that total Friday.

With the 15th hole playing at 279 yards, Merritt hit a driver that bounced and rolled to what was officially listed as 9 inches from the cup.

“I hit a little fade off the tee,” he explained. “It just happened to be right at the pin. Took a couple of nice little bounces and rolled up there. We kicked it in and went to 16.”

The eagle helped Merritt shoot 66 after opening with a 71.

The only ace on a par 4 in PGA Tour history came at the 2001 FBR Open, when Andrew Magee hit a drive that caromed off Tom Byrum’s putter and went into the hole on No. 17.
