U.S. captain Tom Watson pulled Mickelson for Saturday’s morning fourball session after Lefty and Keegan Bradley went 1-1-0 on Day 1 and, after an early American rally on Saturday, kept the southpaw on the bench for the final foursomes session.
“I want our team to win. Whatever we have to do is all I care about,” said Mickelson.
Two years ago at Medinah Mickelson had then-captain Davis Love III sit he and Bradley for Saturday’s afternoon fourball session, a move that drew criticism for both player and captain after the duo posted a perfect 3-0 team record.
This time, however, few can fault Watson for sitting Mickelson and Bradley, who were 3 over par for 16 holes during Friday’s alternate-shot match and lost to Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson, 3 and 2.
Mickelson, who is the only American to play in 10 Ryder Cups, failed to win on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2003 and was particularly wayward off the tee during both of his Friday matches.
