Needing big Rd. 2, Brown's ace propels him to 68

RSS

NORTON, Mass. – Following a first-round 75 at the Deutsche Bank Championship Scott Brown, this week’s FedEx Cup bubble boy at 70th on the point list, knew he needed a big Saturday if he was going to keep his playoff hopes alive.

The spark arrived at the par-3 eighth hole via an 8-iron that never left the flag and dropped into the hole for his second ace on the PGA Tour this season. Brown followed with a 50-foot birdie putt at the ninth and a 15-footer for birdie at No. 12 for a 3-under 68 and seems likely to make the cut.

The top 70 on the FedEx Cup point list advance to next week’s BMW Championship and Brown knew he needed to make the cut at TPC Boston and probably finish inside the top 50 this week to earn his first trip to the third playoff stop.

“I knew I had to play well this week,” said Brown, who began the playoffs 53rd in points but missed the cut at The Barclays. “But I think it kind of freed me up more than anything. I knew I had to be aggressive.”
