Former Open Championship winner Mark O'Meara has withdrawn from next week's event at Royal Liverpool, citing an elbow injury.
O'Meara claimed the claret jug in 1998 at Royal Birkdale and has missed the Open only once since 1995. He has made 12 starts this year on the Champions Tour, including a T-6 finish last month at the Constellation Senior Players Championship, and the 57-year-old is in the field this week at the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National.
According to an AP report, O'Meara's agent, Peter Malik, explained via e-mail that O'Meara's elbow has "been hurting on and off" since the Masters, where he missed the cut. After another MRI, doctors recommended rest for the two-time major champion, and O'Meara reportedly was concerned that the firm turf at Hoylake could exacerbate the injury.
