Olazabal, Paddy, Jimenez named Euro RC assistants

European captain Paul McGinley will practically have a small army working alongside him during the upcoming Ryder Cup.

On Wednesday, a day after revealing his three captain’s picks, McGinley announced that Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal will serve as vice captains for the Sept. 26-28 matches at Gleneagles.

That brings McGinley’s vice-captain total to five, after Des Smyth and Sam Torrance were already named assistants.

The trio that was announced Wednesday has competed in combined 17 Ryder Cups. Olazabal, of course, was the captain who led Europe to a stunning, come-from-behind victory at Medinah in 2012.

Harrington, a three-time major champion, will almost certainly serve as the European captain someday, and this will be his first time as an assistant. It will be third vice-captain gig for both Jimenez.

“I know it’s been common in the past to have three or four vice captains,” McGinley said, “but I’ve gone for five because I feel an extra person is justified due to the additional workload which comes from being the home team, in addition to how well we saw such a system working when we ended up having five vice captains under Colin Montgomerie at Celtic Manor in 2010.”

U.S. captain Tom Watson, meanwhile, will head overseas with three assistants: Steve Stricker, Raymond Floyd and Andy North
