Rory plans to drink 'everything or anything' from claret jug

RSS

HOYLAKE, England – Padraig Harrington let his kids put ladybirds in the claret jug. Phil Mickelson went a little more highbrow, drinking a $40,000 bottle of wine out of the ancient chalice.

What Rory McIlroy will drink out of golf’s oldest trophy is anyone’s guess.

There could be everything or anything in this thing. I'm not too sure. I've got a few friends with me that could fill it with a few things,” McIlroy smiled on Sunday at Royal Liverpool.

The Northern Irishman will likely drink a pint or two from the claret jug in the coming weeks, but he figured he would follow Mickelson’s lead in the immediate future.

“It's only right to fill it with red wine first, and good red wine as Phil said. We'll try to find a good bottle of that tonight somewhere,” he said.

Update: It appears at least one beverage was poured into the claret jug last night.
