Rory McIlroy's round of golf with President Donald Trump last weekend not only prompted a statement from the White House but also one from McIlroy himself.
In response, he writes, to being called "a fascist or a bigot by some people" as a result of his decision to accept the president's invitation to play golf, McIlroy tweeted the following statement Friday:
McIlroy's statement follows his comments made to The Guardian that when it comes to politics, he has “stayed unpolitical in terms of Northern Ireland and all that goes on there but because I’m not an American I don’t feel a real part of it; I’m just interested by the phenomenon of it all. I don’t really care about the policies. The whole circus, this big show is intriguing to watch.”
As mentioned at the end of the statement, McIlroy will make his return to competitive play next week at the WGC-Mexico Championship, the event previously held at Trump Doral.
