Ryu shines for Republic of Korea on Day 1

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – So Yeon Ryu might have been the player of the day if not for Yani Tseng’s heroics in Thursday’s start of the International Crown.

The Republic of Korea’s Ryu and Inbee Park were a formidable pairing, defeating Australia’s Katherine Kirk and Lindsey Wright, 3 and 2.

Ryu made four birdies and an eagle over the first 12 holes, helping the South Koreans take a commanding early lead. Ryu birdied two of the first three holes to help the South Koreans go 2 up. They never trailed in the match.

“Even though we were playing in America, we have a lot of South Korean fans here,” Ryu said. “They encourage us. Everybody had a Korean flag, and they were really cheering us. That was quite a big help.”

Tseng stole the day's headlines making a dramatic birdie putt at the last hole to lead her and Chinese Taipei teammate Phoebe Yao to victory against the American team of Rolex world No. 1 Stacy Lewis and No. 5 Lexi Thompson.
