Safeway becomes new title sponsor of Napa event

Supermarket chain Safeway has signed a five-year deal to replace as the title sponsor of the PGA Tour's annual stop in wine country.

The event will be known as the Safeway Open beginning in 2016, and it will remain on the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., for the forseeable future.

Fry's Electronics had sponsored the Open since 2007, and the event moved from CordeValle in nearby San Jose to Silverado in 2014. That was expected to be a temporary transition, with the tournament at some point heading to John Fry's private course known as The Institute, but it will now remain at Silverado until at least 2020.

"This is great news," said tournament host Johnny Miller. "I am thrilled the tournament will remain at Silverado where I lived for many years with my family on the North Course and have developed so many special lifelong friends and memories."

Safeway served as the title sponsor of the LPGA's event in Portland, Ore., from 1996-2013 and its parent company, Albertsons, has been a longtime sponsor of the Albertsons Boise Open on the Tour.
