Sainz Jr. awarded Northern Trust Open Exemption

PGA Tour rookie Carlos Sainz Jr. has received the 2015 Northern Trust Open Exemption, given annually to a player who represents the advancement of diversity in golf.

Sainz, who has one top 10 in four starts this season, will now play in the Los Angeles-based event Feb. 19-22 at Riviera.

The former Mississippi State standout played on mini-tours until he broke through last year on the circuit, finishing 74th on the money list to earn his PGA Tour card.

Former recipients of the exemption include Vincent Johnson, Joshua Wooding, Joseph Bramlett, Andy Walker, Jeremiah Wooding and Harold Varner III.

“Carlos is a talented golfer with a bright future on the PGA Tour,” Northern Trust chairman and CEO Frederick H. Waddell said, “and we look forward to watching him play at Riviera next month.”
